Adequate intake of vitamin D should be ensured throughout life. Vitamin D is formed in the skin by exposure to sunlight. Dietary sources of vitamin D include oily fish, fish oil, eggs, mushrooms and vitaminised foods such as milk and margarine. Vitamin D intake in Finland has been found to be insufficient. The recommended intake of vitamin D is 7.5 micrograms/day for 2-60 year olds and 20 micrograms/day for those over 60. For pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers, a vitamin D supplement of 10 micrograms/day is recommended throughout the year.

As dietary sources of vitamin D are relatively limited, vitamin D supplementation is recommended throughout the year, especially for children, adolescents, the elderly and pregnant women. Vitamin D supplementation is recommended for almost everyone, especially during the dark season (October to March).
