Physiological effects of iron:
Iron (Fe) is an essential mineral needed to make hemoglobin in red blood cells and carry oxygen from the lungs to every cell.
Women especially have problems getting enough iron. The need for additional iron may also occur in athletes, the elderly and convalescents.
Long-term iron deficiency can cause anemia, which occurs especially in growing adults, young women and expectant mothers. Iron deficiency may occur in women in all age groups, e.g. due to heavy periods, pregnancy and breastfeeding, dieting, poor nutritional habits and eating and absorption disorders. Intense exercise and sports may also cause a decrease in iron stores in men.
Today, plasma ferritin is considered a better indicator of iron deficiency than hemoglobin, which is the storage form of iron and indicates iron deficiency even before the hemoglobin value starts to decrease. It is therefore possible to suffer from iron deficiency, even if the hemoglobin is within the reference limits. Normal ferritin also does not always mean sufficient iron stores, as the ferritin concentration may be elevated in certain inflammatory conditions.
Vitamin C is an important antioxidant that promotes iron absorption. Vitamin C is needed e.g. to maintain good immunity and for the condition of the skin and blood vessels.
